Introduction
In a fantasy time long ago, when the yen was the strongest currency in the world, there was a Japanese city that immigrants called "Yen Town". The Japanese resented the name and discriminated against the immigrants, calling them "Yen Thieves". This is a story about foreign "Yen Thieves" who believe the Japanese yen will help their dreams come true. So they come to the city to fulfill their dreams.

Director Shunji Iwai

Born in 1963, Shunji Iwai began his directing career in 1988 with commercials, music videos, and TV dramas. His cinematic style and vision came to be known as the “Iwai Aesthetic”. In 1995, he scored a huge hit across Asia with Love Letter. Other major works include Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? (Uchiage Hanabi, Shita kara Miruka? Yoko kara Miruka?) (1993), Swallowtail Butterfly (1996), April Story (Shigatsu Monogatari) (1998), All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001), Hana and Alice (2004), Vampire (2012), and The Case of Hana & Alice (2015). His latest work is A Bride for Rip Van Winkle (2016).
