"MAGICAL DO RE MI 4 (Episode 40)"
2002 | 24min. | Color
Hosoda directed this episode of a popular TV anime series. Doremi loses sight of her path and meets a never-aging retired witch. A unique work with lots of philosophical connotations, e.g. a slowly moving glass work, represents the flow of time, questioning the meaning of being a witch. Producer Maruyama (then Madhouse CEO) saw this anime and that led to the creation of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Director: Mamoru Hosoda
Cast: Chiemi Chiba, Tomoyo Harada

Hosoda's talent is showcased in these shorts animes. Early 20th century, young Nadja travels through Europe with a dance troupe and looks for her mother. The ending is contrasted with fixed cameras and horizontal movements, showing Nadja's reflection in a mirror calmly.
