In a seaside village in the Moluccas, 10-year-old Salawaku leaves home to find his sister Binaiya, who has disappeared. He meets 20-year-old Saras from Jakarta, and they begin travelling together. Saras has left her hometown for the same reason as Binaiya... One of the rising female talents in the Indonesian film industry, director Pritagita Arianegara debuts with Salawaku, depicting profound contrasts between beautiful oceanscapes and struggling, unwed mothers. Actress Raihaanun (Binaiya) also appeared in Lovely Man and Following Diana.
A boy named Salawaku (10) wants to find his sister Binaiya (26) who has left the village without notice. Salawaku embarks on a journey to find her and in the middle of his journey he meets Saras (20), a Jakartan teenager who has a problem similar to that of Salawaku’s sister.
[Director's Message]
This film is important because the appeal of human complexity does not occur only in
big cities, but also in remote
areas. I learned the same reality myself when love had turned into a burden by its own weight. The decisions we are taking eventually affect the life of people around us. Salawaku took most of its setting in the open environment in the Moluccas, reachable after eight hours of travel from the capital. As far apart as it is from flashy Jakarta, we can find the same problems there. The fear of social rejection and women's issues are still relevant regardless of place and space.
