Yoshihiro Hanno, a prominent film composer who has worked with auteurs like Hou Hsiao-hsien and Jia Zhangke, makes his directorial debut with this suspenseful love story, which began 14 years ago when Hanno first met Munetaka Aoki in Paris. A WOMAN WAVERING IN THE RAIN is the story of a man living quietly under a new identity, and a mysterious woman who suddenly appears in his life. The film’s vivid colors, beautiful melodies and enigmatic characters make it uniquely memorable.
A man hides his real identity and lives quietly under the name Kenji Iida. No one knows his past. One night, his co-worker comes to his house and leaves a mysterious woman. With her arrival, Kenji’s quiet life begins to unravel. Why has she come to him? Never exposing their true selves, they gradually become attracted to each other. But when their pasts are revealed, an unexpected fate sadly awaits them…
[Director's Message]
Sin exists within us. To be is unfair. With the structure of suspense, I wanted to make the redemption of a man and a woman who both embrace unavoidable loss. Through their suffering I wanted to tell the value of usual life. Collaborating with auteurs like Hou Hsaio-hsien and Jia Zhangke, I came to realize that not only music can express what I desire. Music and film are two sides of the same coin. Naturally my next goal became filmmaking. Humid Asian color and the flow of time, simplified depiction which are bases of Japanese culture made my film unique. It might be the evidence that I am a Japanese.
